Niacin Flush!
First...a little background. I have been working out and taking various supplements (vitamins, protein, creatine, etc.) for quite some time (you wouldn't know it looking at me...but that's a different story...). I've only used good quality, health store supplements and never even thought of getting into steroids, drugs, HGH, or anything like that. Anyway, I've steered away from supplements outside of a smoothie or occasional multivitamin since my gall bladder was removed a few years back.Lately, I've been working out pretty steadily and have been looking into supplements to help maximize my workouts and gains. I've heard quite a bit about Nitric Oxide (actually, L-Argenine causing an increase of Nitric Oxide in the muscles. So... I go out to the health store and, after speaking with the guy working there, purchase a NO increaser supplement.
I've been taking 1/2 dose of the supplement for 1-1/2 weeks and have felt some increase in energy and noticed that my shoulder isn't sore during workouts (I injured my shoulder 3-weeks ago...). Yesterday, I increased to 3/4 dose. During my workout, I started feeling like my skin was getting progressively hotter. I looked into the mirror and noticed that my face was getting red. After awhile, I noticed my arms were getting red. I freaked out and went home. Lisa looked at me and said i looked sunburned. So...I freaked out more.
After about 20-minutes, I could feel things were subsiding. I looked at the ingredients and noticed a full dose had about 200mg of quick release niacin (1000% USRDA). I did some research and realized that I was experiencing the symptoms of a Niacin Flush - which causes the capillaries to increase and, therefore, bloodflow to increase especially on the skin... This causes the skin to redden, feel warm and increases histamines to the area as well causing itching....
It's COLD!
It's in the 20's again today. I could've used a niacin flush standing and waiting for the train this morning....
